Ontario’s Born Ruffians aren’t known for their subtlety. Their ebullient pop rides a roller coaster of frontman Luke LaLonde’s wide-ranging yelps and staccato guitar stabs that ricochet between them. Most of the time, it’s hard to tell whether they’re ecstatic or miserable, but Born Ruffians make music with such conviction that it’s also hard not to sing along. “Needle”, the first song off their forthcoming third album, Birthmarks, starts with LaLonde holding his vowels long and soft before the beat turns everything upright. Like a dog chasing its tail, the lyrics circle back to each other (“Wish that I was taller/ Tall enough to see/ See the things I see today”) as the band supports their vocalist with resounding echoes of his own words.
