The Los Angeles Times have premiered the full stream of Dave Alvin and Phil Alvin’s new album, Lost Time.
First and foremost this time is singer Big Joe Turner, whom they befriended in the 1960s, when they were teenagers and Turner was living and working in and around Los Angeles while still touring nationally when his health permitted.
Elder brother Phil recalled first meeting Turner at a club in L.A. and hearing him sing âWee Baby Blues,â one of four Turner songs the Alvins included on âLost Time.â Theyâve also recorded James Brownâs scorching âPlease Please Please,â a folk arrangement of âIn New Orleans (Rising Sun Blues),â the Golden Gate Quartetâs âWorldâs in a Bad Condition,â which they discovered in a recording by bluesman Tampa Red, plus songs from Lead Belly, Oscar Brown Jr. and several others.
The record is now available today on LP in record stores as a part of Vinyl Tuesday.
Stream the album in full on The Los Angeles Times.
Dave Alvin and Phil Alvin’s Lost Time is out September 18th. Pre-order from the Yep Roc Store, Apple Music, or Amazon.
