Today, Jenny Owen Youngs releases her first full length solo album in over ten years, Avalanche, via Yep Roc Records. Produced by Josh Kaufman (The National, The Hold Steady) and with a collection of collaborators and co-writers, including Christian Lee Hutson who co-wrote âEverglades,â Avalanche is well worth the decade wait. Listen to or purchase Avalanche here and watch the official visualizer for “Everglades” here.
FLOOD premiered the album alongside a track by track from Jenny, stating âThe songs deal with death, tragedy, and abuse, but the verses are also filled with details of driving on backroads while listening to the radio, cigarette ash falling to the ground, and looking in the mirror and not quite recognizing the person who looks back. Itâs an album of intense intimacy that still works on a macro level because of Youngsâ ability to aptly describe moments of individuality in relatable language. Beneath her voice lies ramshackle instrumentation, loosely tied together like the best homespun records are.â
Written with a series of friends including S. Carey, Madi Diaz, The Antlersâ Peter Silberman, Christian Lee Hutson, featuring drumming from The Walkmenâs Matt Barrick and recorded with producer Josh Kaufman (Bonny Light Horseman, The Hold Steady, Cassandra Jenkins, Josh Ritter), the collection is an achingly beautiful exploration of loss, resilience, and growth from an artist whoâs experienced more than her fair share of each in recent years. The songs are deceptively serene here, layering Youngsâ infectious pop sensibilities atop lush, dreamy arrangements that often belie the swift emotional currents lurking underneath. The result is the most raw and arresting release of Youngsâ remarkable career, a brutally honest, deeply vulnerable work of self-reflection that learns to make peace with the past as it transforms doubt and grief into hope and transcendence.Â
Avalanche In The News:
âThe songs on Avalanche are deliriously catchyâŚalmost betraying the seriousness of their subject matter thanks to Youngsâ ability to spin an earworm hook.â
